Seven Reasons to Celebrate Petra as a new World Wonder

I was almost certain of Petra's win in the New Seven Wonders competition, but it never crossed my mind it will be second only to the Great Wall of China. I thought Petra may end up in 5th-7th ranks judged by the small population of Jordan and the enormous influence of the global media that highlightes other places in Europe and Latin America.
The success of Petra is worth celebrating for many reasons. I will try to summarize seven of them catching up the spirit of the seven number that is becoming a thriller nowadays:
1- Petra has manage dto unite Jordanians on one objective at last. With the eexception of religious fundamentalists and nagging depressed/depressing Jordanians who love to underevaluate any achievement every Jordanian participated in the process. Participation was done by voting, promoting the voting and organizing voting campaigns and it was really fantastic to see the people rallying behind one symbol at last, even if it was out of stones.The voting for Petra in Jordan was beyond any forms of ethnic or religious segragations. Petra is a symbol of creativity and unity and was not associated with a Jordanian/  Palestinian dualism and was thus free to be supported by everyone because it has a common  Arab cultural lineage.
2- A country that has a population of 5 millions and an internet penetration rate of 15% and an average annual per capita income of less than 4,000 US $ is not likely to be influential in a global campaigning voting process. To end up second is an indicator of the success in national mobilization as well as the great contribution from outside Jordan. I may assume that around 50 million votes of the 100 millions went to Petra to be second, keeping in mind that each voter can vote for 7 places.
3- Taking a look at the comments left by fellow Arabs in online forums (Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera for example) makes me celebrate the win more as this annoyed a great amount of Jordan haters out there. We have read a lot od stupid comments about Jordan and Petra and the result is like salt in the wounds of our haters.
4- Petra represents the magic of ancient engineering. The most remarkable component is the ancient hydrological system which I will post about soon. It represents another reminder of how Jordanians can solve the probles of scarec resources with hard work and developing their country like carving in the rocks. Current Jordan is very similar to ancient Petra with the fantastic effort done by the people to build and maintain the country in very difficult circumstances.
5- The campaign for Petra was designed in a smart way. I do not recall any banner telling Jordanians that voting for Petra is a "national obligation" and I have never seen the silly superficial camapigns we got used to in politics (Jordan First, We are all Jordan). This process respected the mind s of people and was based on convictions.
6- Jordan was always present on the global map before the voting process but to know that billions of people will link the name of our country to a fantastic city and not to Zarqawi is a big wave of fresh air to us. Good news from Jordan is always something to celebrate truely.
7- Despite what UNESCO says, this voting process was popular. It reflects the attitudes of peopel all around the world. Maybe not very democratic but it was open with no restrictions and not hijacked by so-called experts. This is an indicator of the "collective mind" of the world population which is the true form of cultural globalization and we are so proud that the people of the world selected Petra with this landslide win.

Of course, the great night of celebration was disrupted with some negative events, mainly the pathetic performance of Jordan TV and some bad behaviour from people. I will get back to this soon.

We have the right to be happy, proud and most importantly JORDANIANS..
I wish that the public can see how much hate and envy some arabs have for jordan, I think it is a duty for us to expose this to jordanians so that we can damn FOCUS..

Yes Batir, the entire Jordanian population wouldn't even equal half of China's internet users, so yes, it is a great success indeed!

I was shocked too to read the comments on Al Arabiya, well now we can take solace in knowing that they're eating their hearts out! ;-)

Finally, please enjoy the following poem that was written by John William Burgon in 1845,winner of the Newdigate Prize for his poem: Petra

PETRA

It seems no work of Man’s creative hand,
by labor wrought as wavering fancy plnned;
But from the rock as by magic grown,
eternal, silent, beautiful, alone!
Not virgin-white like that old Doric shrine,
where erst Athena held her rites divine;
Not saintly-grey, like many a minster fane,
that crowns the hill and consecrates the plain;
But rose-red as if the blush of dawn,
that first beheld them were not yet withdrawn;
The hues of yough upon a brow of woe,
which Man deemed old two thousand years ago,

match me such marvel save in Eastern clime,
a rose-red city half as old as time.

batir, you are such a confused person, yesterday you were telling us how you were shocked by the civilized west, and today you are so happy that your country turned out to have the most number of people with nothing to do but to vote in an armature competition, not only that you are also so happy for the jordanian unity in the form of celebrating in streets like animals, I bet it was a very civilized scene. I thought that you had some good reasons to celebrate but I only found some childish reasons (salt in their eyes what are you a fifth grader!!!???), the only reason I find to celebrate this is that you all have no real achievement to celebrate. Before some idiots think that I am a member of the “Jordanian haters club” as batir likes to call it, give me a real achievement and I will celebrate with you, but not on abdoun’s circle of course.

Didn't I tell you not to play this card, even if we assume that I hate jordan isn't it your job to answer people like me and (throw salt in their wounds). This answer of (mish la3eb ma3ak la innak ma bti7ib il ordon) makes me wonder how could a person with this fifth grader mentality become a journalist.
Just for people out there (not for you batir) I am saying this not because I hate jordan but because I want jordan to be more developed and civilized.

Excellent points! The best one is knowing that the global population would link Jordan to Petra insteado Zarqawi! We really needed such as event to brighten our image :)

I am wondering about those hatres on Al Arabyyeh! I don't think that this is a common attitude by other Arabs, they are just a bunch of hatres, who most probably hate themselves!

What I find more weird is how some people in Jordan are not happy with the results and being sarcastic about how Petra doesnt deserve it and how would we benefit from it (they mean on their individual self)! People can really be short sighted, and negatvie!

Al Urduni if you read what the "civilised" hasan wrote it goes the following "not only that you are also so happy for the jordanian unity in the form of celebrating in streets like animals, I bet it was a very civilized scene". So, hasan did not criticise the government bout thousands of good welling Jordanians who expressed their joy and called then animals. Now you want me to respect someone with this attitude. The Germans danced and celebrated throughout the night when they won 3rd place in the World Cup and no one called them uncivilised. In this post, the word "government" was never mentioned. It is all about the true sense of loyalty and joy practiced by Jordanians which is a little bit difficult to be appreciated by some of you out there.

Your problem batir is that you try to compensate for your poor skills as a journalist by hypocrisy, I am sure that the people in the streets were celebrating out of loyalty just like they celebrate the tawjihi results while most of them dont even know someone who passed the exams, and I am also sure that most people stuck in traffic that day felt like they were in germany.
