Jordan Watch
An update and analysis of development and reform challenges in Jordan from a social democratic perspective.

Study: Jordan more innovative than Russia and Argentina!

I have a tendency to like the global ranking systems developed by research institutions and networks. They may not be scientifically accurate with a margin of error in collecting data but they do reflect the actual situation in a relative manner.
I was interested with the Global Innovation Index (GII) developed by the INSEAD and World Business Magazine. This index tries to measure which nations and regions respond more to the challenges of innovation. It tries to give an idea about the countries strength and deficiencies with respect to innovation related policies and practices.
The framework upon which the GII model rests relies upon eight pillars made up of five inputs and three outputs (see below) that underpin the factors that enhance innovative capacity and demonstrate results from successful innovation.

The five Input pillars:
Institutions and Policies
Human Capacity
Infrastructure
Technological Sophistication
Business Markets and Capital

The three Output pillars:
Knowledge
Competitiveness
Wealth

More details of the methodology can be found here

The 2007 ranking puts Jordan in 53rd position in a list of 107 nations and that means that Jordan is exactly at the half point in the list.
The list is headed by the USA followed by Germany, UK, France and Japan. In the Arab World the UAE is in position 14 and that is a little bit lower than I may expect since the UAE is leading in experimenting a lot of innovative ideas. Kuwait is in 30th position and Tunisia is 41st. The Arab countries following Jordan are Egypt (74), Morocco (76) and Algeria (83). Rich Arab countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain were not assessed.
It is worth mentioning that Jordan has been superior in ranking to big and resourceful countries like Russia (54), Croatia (55), Argentina (63) and Pakistan (73) since all the mentioned four countries are real leaders in innovation.
Another example of a good assessment of our human capital and country status from international sources. I wonder if the Islamic Action Front (IAF) and other ideological opposition groups will respect such findings. Of course, they need to read it first and that is always a difficult undertaking for them!

right! and what's the average income in Jordan? what's the unemployment figurer? what's the corruption index? what's the poverty rate? How does your non-credible source reflects positively on the on the average Jordanian? geeeez! the regime is becoming more like an eastern bloc country with it's propaganda.

Wow, another anonymous hero out there. Are you being cloned in Jordan nowadays? The average income is 4,688 US $ per capita. The poverty line (below 2.0 US $ a day) is 7.0%, the unemployment is 14.3% and the corruption index is 40 out of 163 nations. These are all developmental challenges that need to be tackled with hard work and concerted effort but not with negative useless criticism especially coming from an anonymous. Provide some alternatives based on empirical analysis if you can.

good lord. you can't even be honest about your statistics. let me guess. you are not into UN figures. the are an islamist conspiracy here to embarrass the regime. Naughty boy, trying to whitewash official failures. All we have to do is drive beyond your neighborhood and you will see how devastating the economic situation has been for most jordanians. you are so pitiful Batir. Are you angling for a government position? I feel sorry for the overwhelming majority of Jordanians who just can't get a break. you really have proven that only the islamists seem to care, but you seem to care for your job hunting prospects. also, am I supposed to be insulted or intimidated by your reference to anonymity? is this some tribal Jordanian thing? could this be the the Ebn El Anonymous insult? Ya Iben El Majhooleh!! wow, I am offended.

HYZ, whatsoever...I can call you any name if you are hiding.
The figures I used are from the UNDP Human Development Report 2006 and from the World bank Country Assessment Report 2007. If you have other statistics get out of your cave and provide me with them.
The economic situation is devastating, so how did you contribute yourself to the alleviation of poverty at least for one person, or does the regime stop you from providing assistance. Oh yeh, the regime should care for all while you are on your ass fooling yourself woth anonymous online heroic statements.

Dear Mr. Batir,
I rather enjoy your articles; i am just disappointed in the manner in which you react to the comments left by your readers. Attempting to mock your critics is a rather childish way of dealing with presenting your point of view. With that put aside, i think that you are a good writer and i truly like your articles. Sometimes, i think that you tend to be very supportive of the monarchist governments when in fact you claim to be a soc-dem;. The pictures (that you draw) of a great, strong, innovative Jordan is helpful but the question is what does the ugly side look like.

Dear Wael, you should have noticed long time ago that Batir is neither social nor democract. But in Jordan as in most non-democratic regimes, roles are divided between regime men. One guy plays the social democrat, another Nationalist, another islamist, another communist.

Batir's dismissive post alone shows he is neither a dem nor a soc. A democrat would ask for democratic change when the regime fails to make life better for its people. A socialist would call on central government to protect the needs of its more vulnerable citizens (that's most Jordanians). But here we have Batir whitewashing the regime's failure while blaming concerned jordanains, who have no control over their destiny, to take responsibility.

That's why I want to see the islamists in office. They will take care of needy Jordanians, like they always do. They will fight corruption like they always do. And they will chart a foreign policy that will not cohabitate with imperialists and colonialists at the expense. But the sad part is that the islamists (or whatever credible opposition exists) will be thwarted by the regime and we are back to square zero with you and your regime destroying every viable opposition that can benefit Jordan and Jordanians, then blaming us for not doing anything. You folks are like gangsters who tie up a victim with chains and weights then drop him into the ocean and wonder why he can't swim. You siphon off billions of tax and grant funds to pay off regime loyalists and their families then when the economy fails to deliver for Jordanians you mock them and tell them to fix it. the audacity.

Wael thanks for your comments. My hostile reactions are only directed at some people who come here to criticise me personally and through me with unproven accusations. The histility is directed towards me and I need to respond. I have always respected and engaged with all the decent commentators who came and criticised my post in a respectful manner focusing on issues and not on my personality. Look at the comments. I am accused of being zionist, american and undemocratic because I say things they do not like. They even mock at my name. This is beyond constructive criticism and I will always respond to them with the way they deserve.
Thanks again for your visit and I hope to see more of your comments.

Garfan I will respond to your note about social democracy and the regime in a separate post. If you are interested in truth and not attacking me you can go to the archive of my blog (English and Arabic) and see that I do write about the social and economic problems but I do not simplify it with criticising the regime as you do.
In addition, I would love to show me a country in this universe governed by Islamists and fights corruption and protects the rights of people. They even impose the way of dressing for God sake!

Batir: Don't reply to comments like the ones I am seeing lately on your wonderful blog, ignore the dogs and let them bark from away, just like "j3ari" dogs...
God bless..

Batir, the way I see it the Islamists in Turkey and Iran and Malaysia are doing pretty darn well for their countries. not to mention the only victorious military encounter with the zionist colonialist was led by Lebanese islamists, the Hizbouallah. Of course Islamism has been a mixed bag, but Arab nationalism and socialism and communism and tribalism have failed with flying colors. they can claim NOT ONE SINGLE SUCCESS. The good ones have been assassinated, the rotten ones sold their services to the highest bidder.

Omran, the Islamists in Turkey are very enlightened and respect the values of the Turkish state and proved to have a robust and effective socio-economic programmes. Islamists in Jordan are only slogan sellers and have no enlightment. In Malaysia the system is closer to national secularism that has merge dthe Malayo and Chinese origins in a well articulate economic system for the best of the country. Islamists in Iran are more oppressive than any Arab regime and living under their role is not a pleasure. I will certainly be content to have a Jordanian Islamic movement similar to the one on Turkey but all our Islamists can do is showing their admiration to Zarqawi and Qaeda.
