I was shocked to read the information posted on Natasha's blog regarding the movement of key figures of the Syrian opposition to Jordan and lebanon to organize a campaign aganist the syrian regime. The information was based on a story published in Al Seyasa newspaper from Kuwait and republished in the Free Syria website.
Of course the Jordanian government has not responded, and no media coverage was published in Jordan. I have just written an Article in my column for Addustour newspaper about this issue which may, or may not appear tomorrow! I will be summarizing what I wrote in this post.
Although I will never shed a tear in case the syriam regime falls, I strongly believe it will be a grave mistake gor Jordan to engage itself in this process. We have always been targeted by conspiracies from Syria as early as 1960 when the Jordanian Prime Minister Haza'a Majali was assasinated in his office by an explosive planted by Syrian intelligence. Syria has always been a safe haven for all Jordanian opposition figures including those who wanted to topple the regime in the 60s and 70s. In the 80s a campaign by the Syrian intelligence targeting Jordanian ambassadors killing 4 of them including a relative of mine and then Syria organized to assasinate Mudar Badran the Jordanian Prime Minister. In the 90s and 2000s the interference was linked to facilitating the entrance of weaspons and terrorists from Syria to Jordan.
Now we have every reason to be angry and give them a taste of their own medicine, but this is not Jordan. Jordan has never supported opposition groups, never assasinated arab officials, never planted explosives in arab cities and we do not want to start now.
There is a certain "moral" element in this Jordanain policy of no intervention. I can claim many mistakes done by Jordan but can also point proudly that we have never supported terrorism and conspiracies and it will be a matter of our national security and credibility to maintain this policy. I am waiting for a clear statement from the government against such stories and a firm position on not allowing any political or military intervention in Syria's domestic issues.
