Moreover, the report says "Many countries used the “war on terrorism” to attack their political opponents, branding them as “Islamic terrorists,” and the world report documents many serious abuses outside the fight against terrorism".

Here comes again the report all Arab government united in their hatred of! The annual "Human Rights Watch" report for 2006 exposes the arab governments and their violations of human rights.
The press release from HRW states that :" New evidence demonstrated in 2005 that torture and mistreatment have been a deliberate part of the Bush administration’s counterterrorism strategy, undermining the global defense of human rights".
Of course, the section on the Arab World, including Jordan was of "rich evidence" and had a lot to tell. You can take a closer look at the Middle East sub-sections from
The section on Jordan focuses on arrests made in 2005 for many activists from the Islamic Action Front, other Islamic movement and ultra leftist and Arab nationalist parties. It is funny however that the HRW defends the right of expression for all political parties and all ideological movements in Jordan, while the majority of Islamist and Arab nationalist parties and unions consider HRW to be an organization working in a conspiracy against Arab and Islamic values by advocating women's rights, peace and religious freedoms.
The report is a "must read" for all political and development activistis in Jordan but also it is a very enlightening outlook on the level of democracy in the country. The 4 pages section in Jordan can give a lot of information and controversial statements that I will be discussing in details in another post.
