It has been really done by the Upper House of Parliament. They have rejected the Incom Tax law, based on a request from the government, which was based also on a wide public campaign organized and energized by the civil society and press.
This is a victory for democracy in Jordan. The Senate told Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit, that the law was in conflict with His Majesty King Abdullah's Letter of Designation to the government, in which he called for “reviewing the Income Tax Law to achieve justice within the society and encourage investment.”
According to the Senate committees, the amendment “does not alleviate economic hardships facing the nation, as was outlined in the King's Speech from the Throne,” at the inauguration of the Parliament's current session on Dec. 1.
This case proves that public campaigning, when organized around a commoun national goal can yield fruitful political results. Yes the Jordanian population can affect decision making and we have to belive in this.
